Episode Summary

Psychedelic music started in the 1960s and coincided with the rise in use of psychedelic drugs such as LSD and mushrooms which facilitated visual and auditory hallucinations. These two forces were so intertwined that a young band called the Warlocks played a key role at the Acid Test Events happening in the mid-60’s in San Francisco that really helped popularize LSD use across the country. And of course, that band eventually changed its name to The Grateful Dead. In fact, Owsley Stanley who established the first major underground LSD factory and who was called the “Acid King” became the Grateful Dead’s financial backer, renting them a house and buying them sound equipment. So yes, Psychedelic music and Psychedelic drugs go hand and hand. BUT… do they have to? Is the music good on its own merits? I mean can we just listen to psychedelic music without the drugs and truly enjoy it, while not necessarily listening to it as it was originally intended to be heard? We don’t know. However, on today’s pod we’ll explore these questions and more as we share with you our favorite psychedelic albums and why we love them.
