Favorite Piano-led Jazz Albums of the 1950s w/ Harpist Minta Spencer

Episode Summary

As the 1940’s were coming to an end, Jazz musicians were starting to rebel against the nervous energy and tension of bebop which was led by Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk and others. This led the 1950’s in jazz to be a bit schizophrenic as it was bouncing back and forth from the popularity of cool jazz from the west coast to the hard bop of New York City. All along the musicians of the era, if they wanted to work and eat had to be versed in all of it and no instrument had to this more than the piano players who provided both the rhythmic and melodic foundation for much of the music coming out of this era. As a result, during the 1950’s you saw an abundance of amazing piano players providing the backbone of some of the best albums of this decade. Well on today’s show we are going to shine a light on some of these stellar piano players of this era as we discuss our favorite piano-led albums of the 1950’s.
