The List: A Right Fiction Podcast

Favorite Jam Bands with Julian Booker

Episode Summary

When the Grateful Dead formed in the late 60’s their music didn’t fit into an established category such as pop, rock, blues, folk rock, or country. While individual songs could be considered under one of these labels, overall their music drew on all of these genres and, more frequently, melded several of them. In addition, their live shows, fed by an improvisational approach to music, were different from most touring bands at the time. While most bands performed their set, just the way they practiced it, the Grateful Dead bucked this formality and took a much more casual approach…. to just about everything. From this blueprint, fans developed a strong sense of community and loyalty to, not only the Dead’s music, but to their approach to life. More bands popped up like - The Allman Brothers Band, Phish, moe, and Moon Boot Lover - which followed the Dead’s blueprint and were accepted into this lively community of mixed genres, improvisation, substance enhancement, and festivals….. and thus a bonafide Jam Band Scene or Community was born. Today there are tons and tons of Jam bands out there and for folks new to the jam scene it can be hard to find your place in all this music and community.
